Because hearing health is so important to physical and emotional well-being especially with age, a little advice now can go a long way to helping you hear and feel better later.

When to get a hearing test?

When you were a child, you may have received a regular hearing test at the doctor’s office or you may even remember lining up at school to have your hearing checked. If your school days are in the distant past and the memory of your last hearing test is fuzzy, then, today is a great time to schedule an appointment so you can establish a hearing baseline. If you are older than age 50, it is especially important to make an appointment to have your hearing tested. Because hearing loss is gradual and often not noticed until it is really disruptive, determining your hearing baseline is important for monitoring overtime and catching hearing loss early.

Noise exposure is another factor that can guide you on when you should schedule a hearing test. Noise-induced hearing loss is very common. If you have an occupation or hobby where you are exposed to high levels of noise frequently and for extended amounts of time, you should plan to start as early as possible with monitoring your hearing health. Based on that first test, your audiologist will suggest how often you should return to have your hearing checked.

How to prepare for the appointment?

In advance of your hearing test appointment, prepare your questions. Start by thinking through your daily listening scenarios – are any difficult to navigate? Make a list and bring to the appointment to discuss. Remember to be ready to answer questions about the medications you are taking and about your health history.
